MySQL Won't Bind to TCP Port 3306?

Hello, All:

I've installed mysql-server, mysql-client, and a few other mysql-related packages. Everything's swell but I've got one question: Why won't mysql bind to port 3306? I've checked /etc/mysql/my.cnf, /var/log/mysql.log, and /var/log/mysql/mysql.err but can't find the root-cause.

mysql.log reports that mysql was started and bound to TCP port 0 (I assume that this means that binding was a failure) but the unix socket /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock was openend.

I've checked mysqld's config file and the values are correct.

`hostname` returns the machines name (as it appears in /etc/hosts).

I'm able to use the mysql client to log-in to the server (through the socket, I suppose).
