Panic'ing 2.4.21-pre4 on a PPC604e (IBM 830 Carolina) - Patches?

The box is currently running what seems to be a heavily patched 2.2.13
(MSK 1999). This kernel is _reall_ old, and resides on a boot floppy
that I attempt to keep in pristine condition.

Firmware has been updated to the latest IBM 8x0 1.10.

a. rsync'd linuxppc_2_4
b. Built kernel.
 - Using PowerPC unstable toolchain
c. booted zImage.prep via bootp/tftp

I can't get serial console to fly so here goes my typing:

ide3: Wait for ready failed before probe !

hda: task_no_data_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:02

Suggested patches?

I know about the firmware vs. Linux CHS drive geometry mismatch, and
that's not the issue. I'd just like to be able to boot and test a 2.4.x
kernel :) Many thanks.
