Depends on the color depth you are using.  Try 15/16 bpp, that should
work fine.  With 24 or 32 bpp I never got overlay working on my box
(old iMac with a Rage gfx chipset + bt848 card).  I think it is
impossible because the bt848/878 can't do the byte ordering needed by
the gfx card.  xawtv in "grabdisplay" mode should work on 24+32 bpp
too, but it eats cpu time then because xawtv converts stuff in
software ...
