Also, for some good introduction to console commands, try the pgi Users
Guide. Just ignore the graphical parts, and check out the console stuff.

BTW, If you don't keep your computer on at night, you have to
initially and periodically rebuild the locate database using updatedb.
But these are also debian-user issues, not debian-powerpc.
