I was getting a similar issue running gnome/sawfish.

What I did was to add the line:
Option          "UseFBDev"

into the Section "Device" of my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

The entire section looks like:
Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Generic Video Card"
        Driver          "radeon"
        Option          "UseFBDev"
        Option          "AGPMode"	 "4"

This seems to have done the trick.
