it may be well possible that the kernel has some trouble
with your IDE/DMA resources (and subsequently might lose
your harddisk under heavy load :) ). as a workaround, you could
try to manually disable DMA access on /dev/hda. to see
whether it's currently enabled, type
hdparm -d /dev/hda
to disable it, type
hdparm -d0 /dev/hda

for a more persistant solution, this would be required to get
added to some of the startup scripts.
