Well, the iMac is somewhat unusual, because for the 3 resolutions
supported, only one refresh rate is allowed. These refresh rates
are a bit higher than you find normally.
Notice:
(**) R128(0): Mode "1024x768": 78.5 MHz, 59.8 kHz, 74.8 Hz

That's 1024x768 ~75 Hz: pretty standard,
800x600 ~95 Hz: somewhat odd,
640x480 ~117 Hz: (!)
At any other refresh rate, the iMac monitor is completely blank.
I know that 1024x768 generally always worked, but that I needed
modelines for 800x600 and 640x480. Now that I look at my current
XF86Config-4, recent versions of debconf has taken out all the
modeline stuff. I guess UseFBDev teaches X about these modes?
