Actually, for the umlauts I use this with xmodmap:
keycode 30 = u U udiaeresis Udiaeresis
keycode 32 = o O odiaeresis Odiaeresis
keycode 38 = a A adiaeresis Adiaeresis
so I get them by pressing Mode_switch and the vowel.
