 I have had this same problem with my iMac, and haven't found a solution.
 Instead, I use the console to play CDs straight through:

#!/bin/sh
cdda2wav -C little -t 1+`cdir | tail -1 | sed 's/^..[^ ]* *//'` -D /dev/cdrom -N -e -d0 -I cooked_ioctl -q &

I added -C little recently, because most CDs are little endian
and the cdda2wav endian-guessing routine guesses wrong sometimes.

The cdir part just locates the last track number.
