The fbdev driver has never probed the monitor. When it says 'Checking
Modes against monitor...', it simply checks against the frequency ranges
specified in the monitor section.

It probably works after running another fbcon app because after that,
VT7 is initialized to 800x600, and it's just picking up that current
mode because it doesn't have any others left. I doubt fbset -a helps
there because I think it only sets VTs 1-6 as well until VT7 has been
used.
