german keyboard, o[l|d]dworld weirdnesses

hi,

I have an oldworld g3, original mac keyboard and I can't get the german
keyboard to work properly (no '@', '~', '|')
Actually _all_ the right hand modifiers don't work but:

dumpkeys (looking for 'Shift')
shows that 42 (working Shift_L) is there and 54 (which showkey reports
when I press Shift_R) is also mapped to Shift but has _no_ effect.
Same with right control and alt (which is alt_gr ...grrrrrrr)

needless to say that it doesn't work in X either and whatever I put in
my .xmodmap doesn't change the situation much ...

this is kernel 2.2.20-pmac from the 3.0.23 boot floppy, apted to unstable
proc reports that my keyboard sends linux keycodes, i386 keymaps work (but
not to the full extent)

any hints ?

thanks,

x
