I realized today that 'atyfb' was a video= setting, so I edited the boot
image again. vi -b will always be my friend.

The result is now with the framebuffer driver in Xfree that X decides
that 1024x768 would not be accepted by the framebuffer and tries to
use 800*600 which displays in the top left corner of the laptop screen
looking quite weird.

(II) FBDev(0): using default device
(II) Running in FRAMEBUFFER Mode
(**) FBDev(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(==) FBDev(0): RGB weight 888

With the ati driver via fbdev it just fails to recognize the chipset.

Now after another try with the fbdrv setup I get a kernel panic.. waiting
to reboot..

http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2000/debian-powerpc-200012/msg00059.html
gives me a hint to try an empty Modes line in the Display Subsection or
none at all.

And that works, and gives me an image and everything!

On to the next problem.
