open firmware must have some really weird name for the first ide disk which
I can't reproduce.

Even 'boot disk' gives can't OPEN:  /pci/mac-io/ata0/disk@0:0

(I can see open firmware diagnostics just fine on the main screen: just
nvsetenv auto-boot? false)
