Well, actually, I'm not sure if the reason why it doesn't work in MacOS X
is just an Apple bug or if they intentionally disabled the feature because
of power consumption.
MacOS 9 has some features to slow down or stop the CPU for longer period of
times when the machine is idle that what would be possible with a fixed
timer preemption scheduler like we have in linux. They have different "idle"
modes depending on the user activity, which can be nice in some case, but
I beleive a lot of linux users would hate them on servers ;)
Finally, in linux, we don't yet have proper code to access the thermostats
in the machine, which would be useful to measure if there is really a risk
or not by running with the lid closed.
