Airport woes

Dear list,

I recently tried to set up a wireless lan at home.
I bought a linksys WAP11 accesspoint, a linksys PCMCIA card for my dad's laptop, and an airport card for me. All would be well, if i could set my airport card to work [:)] So, here's my problem,
kernel 2.4.17 benh-patched (thank you !)
(but the same happened with a previous 2.4.16)
after a modprobe aiport and an ifconfig eth1 up :
dmesg :

airport.c 0.06f (Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>)
eth1: Station identity 001f:0001:0004:0010
eth1: Looks like a Lucent/Agere firmware version 4.16
eth1: Ad-hoc demo mode supported
eth1: MAC address 00:30:65:02:19:C1
eth1: Station name "HERMES I"
eth1: ready
airport: card registered for interface eth1

so far so good.

iwconfig eth1 :
eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"" Nickname:"HERMES I"
         Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462GHz Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3 Retry limit:4 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
         Power Management:off
         Link Quality:0/92 Signal level:134/153 Noise level:134/153
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
         Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

I can change the essid OK, iwlist eth1 channel reports channel 10,11,12,13 ok
(i live in France), my basestation is on channel 11 = 2.462GHz....

But, wherever i go in and outside my home, link quality = 0,
signal level = noise level = 134.
I thought of a hardware problem, so i made sure the card was properly inserted
and connected to the integrated antenna...

Has anyone encountered the problem ? Could this be a hardware problem ? How
could I make sure that my hardware and the antenna is OK ?

I'd really appreciate any help on the matter,
thanks for reading,

Jean-Baptiste Note.
