apt-cache search pilot
yields a number of interesting results.

Does your normal user have permissions to access /dev/ttyUSB0, and have
you set up the link and everything correctly in the GNOME control
center?
FWIW, I've been synchronizing my m100 successfully for a while via IrDA.
