well one thing that didn't occur to me in my early reply, are you
trying to boot the kernel on your hard disk, or just boot the CD
kernel using the hard disk as the root partition instead of the
initrd?

if the latter you can do it with the old yaboot, just do as walters
suggested and enter at the boot: prompt

debian root=/dev/hda3

arguments you can change, its just syntax like this thats broken in
that version of yaboot:

hd:3,/boot/vmlinux 

as for booting an alternate yaboot sure, just netboot it, or put it on
a CD with a yaboot.conf next to it.  if you telling it to boot from
the hard disk the conf is nothing unusal, if from the CD thats different..
