So, this software was released before your computer was manufactured.

Yes, this certainly doesn't happen in the current release. r3 should
be fine, AFAIK. The website in my signature uses r3, it's been
downloaded by 1500 people with no complaints... but it doesn't fit on
a floppy, it's about 30M. 

You need to get a more recent update somehow. Have you considered
bringing the iMac to the network for the install? They're pretty
portable... but then again, you'll be wanting more software all the
time, so it would be better to get a more up-to-date CD.
