Use kernel-package to compile your kernel and you will avoid these
kinds of problems.
apt-get install fakeroot kernel-package
cd /usr/src/linux && fakeroot make-kpkg --revision hostname.1 kernel_image
dpkg -i ../kernel-image-*hostname.1*.deb
