i make regular backups and use "e2fsck -y" to fix filesystems if e2fsck
bails, falling back to the tape if data is lost. how many mortals really
know how to do it better manually than e2fsck -y?
a way to consistently lock the kernel is to fill an hfs filesystem (under
~2.4.0). i used to wonder how hfsfs had gotten *so* bad that it was
constantly crashing the OS but i was running out of space on a little
(~20M) partition.
