well solved my own problem. on a whim I took out one of the 512M SODIMMs and the CD booted fine. I had this same problem with LinuxPPC 2000 Q4, though not with the latest YellowDog Distribution. I'd love to suggest to the powers-that-be to build in high-memory support into the boot kernels in the future. please? thanks -js
