I assume the module is called something else, since /dev/sg1 works
for me, after I track it down and change its permissions.

Well, yeah, since I want to be able to use cdparanoia as a user other
than root.

My main question is, since I managed to get this working eventually,
should this have been set up automatically when I installed Debian?
