This is do-able with one reservation. I think we should fix Xautoconfig if it is not working right. I would say that 99% of the time Xautoconfig defaults work fine. The only thing would be to probably add a --depth option to Xautoconfig so you that a newbie can have a high colour default without having to use a text editor.
Since 2.4 will have saner defaults for most machines and optimal defaults for portables, this may be a better solution.
On a side note, I am trying to push some of the nice defaults in 2.4 aty128fb back to 2.2 so that ibook, imac, pismo, tibook users get a correct default (eg 1028x768@60hz for pismo). I am mostly done except for the tibook. So, a user using this kernel marely needs to boot (with no video= args) and run Xautoconfig and voila. The only other thing that would be nice is to have a --depth option for Xautoconfig since the console defaults to 8bpp.

PS: If you Mlan want to take ownership of a XF86Config bank and need the web space just let me know. Getting people to submit working XF86COnfig's for machines that won't work any other way may be a good way to spot holes in existing config utilities.
