I used to have the same problem. Looking at the server log I found out that it
attached to VT2 while the output was on VT7. Explicitly specifying vt7 as a
server arg solved it for me, here's the gdm.conf line I have now:

0=/usr/bin/X11/X vt7 -nolisten tcp
