compiling kernelsource/mouse input layer

Installed the 2.2.18pre21 kernel source package, and the
matching patch, and the documentation package, and applied
the patch, and configured with xconfig, and compiled, and a
week later when it was done ~:^) I discovered that the mouse
was non-functional again.  The part of the config where I
thought I should enable the input layer for the adb mouse
and whatnot, was greyed out.  All I got was the old adb
mouse driver, which doesn't seem to work at all for me. 
Using /dev/adbmouse as the device yields no results.  So,
what did I do wrong?
