If you look through the archives in this group, there is available XFree86
4.0 which works directly with the card.  You still need to have the frame
buffer driver to get text mode (unless you just want to be blind until X
starts).

Since the Mac's boot rom doesn't initialize the card into text mode, the
regular vga text driver won't work.  Initializing the cards into text mode
is very dependent on the card, so you might as well use the frame buffer
driver.
