PowerPC Cross Compilers

Hi,

I'm in the process of building cross (i386 -> powerpc) versions
of

    binutils
    gcc

as Debian packages.

I'm already quite familiar with creating cross versions of these using
./configure and make.

I'm currently climbing the learning curve for Debian packaging, and how
binutils and gcc are packaged. I've done some trolling of the mail lists,
and have read through a recent thread on the topic of cross compilers
starting at

  http://www.debian.org/Lists-Archives/debian-toolchain-0004/msg00000.html

The proposal mentioned in

  http://www.debian.org/Lists-Archives/debian-toolchain-0004/msg00009.html

seems to be closest to my current thinking.

Some questions I have are

1. Has someone already done this? Am I re-inventing the wheel?

2. If not 1), then who has started to do this, and where can I find
   any work in progress?

Any other relevant scraps of info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank.
