nope. switching vts makes no difference. i can experiment with this more if
you like.

unfortunately not: it comes up with an error. it does report the resolution
and depth fine but the timings are made up. here's the relevant part of the
x server output when trying to run on offb:

the "FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument" is the same message i get when
trying to use fbset to change resolution etc under offb.
