Use fbset -x to get a modeline for the mode you have in console. If that
doesn't work, it's probably an r128 driver bug.

At the console, fbset -x gives me:
Mode "1600x1200"

I added the modeline in my XF86Config to read:
Modeline "1600x1200" 100.001 1600 1616 1624 1640 1200 1216 1224 1240 -HSync
-VSync
But starting X still goes to a blank screen and the only thing I can do is
power-off. /var/log/XFree86.0.log doesn't report any problems.
I guess its a bug in the driver then :-(
For what its worth, my yaboot.conf is booting with 'novideo' - changing
this to 'video=aty128fb:vmode:20,cmode:32' gives me a maxmimum of
1280x1024, but I can switch between X and the console(s) happily.
