Yes, I believe that these are "official" disks. And there is _no_
"current" directory! I've been checking out
 dists/potato/main/disks-powerpc/2.2.16-2000-07-26/powermac/<directory
 > with 9 files and a directory with 4 disk images>.

Otherwise, you're looking in the right directory, I think. You want
the rescue.bin in powermac/images-1.44 and the base2_2.tgz in
2.2.16*/ or /common/ or something like that.

Okay, the file path to each of these is
<hfspartition>/dists/potato/main/disks-powerpc/2.2.16-2000-07-26/base2_2.tgz
and
<hfspartition>/dists/potato/main/disks-powerpc/2.2.16-2000-07-26/powermac/images-1.44/rescue.bin

When I enter this file path and then hit "enter", the cursor just jumps back to the initial line where I enter the path name.

So I'm stuck. What do I do next?

Oh, by the way, I tried out the <.....> option this time _before_ it tried manually entering a directory path. I was presented with a list of directories. Of course, _none_ of these matched what was on the CD!

The plan was simple. Unfortunately, so was Bullwinkle.
