The PPC Linux sound drivers are very nearly, but not quite, OSS compatible. I've found a number of programs that don't like it on my Power Mac 8200 with the DMA sound driver; xmms and mikmod, for example. (Although alsaplayer and xmp work fine.)
One workaround is to use esd, but this uses a lot of CPU time. Another workaround is to use esd to configure the raw sound device, and then tell your program to write to disk but give it the filename /dev/dsp; this makes mikmod work.
Can you cat stuff directly to /dev/dsp correctly?
