Okay, I over-generalized. But the problem remains, I just tried it once again
this evening.

Again, I'm on a Starmax (Pmac 4400 clone) with built-in Mach64 reported during
boot as:
atyfb: mach64VT (ATI264VT) [0x5654 rev 0x40] 1M EDO, 14.31818 MHz XTAL, 200 MHz
PLL, 63 Mhz MCLK

This evening I noticed something new: some of the text seemed to be rendering on
the whice screen! Indeed, there was just enough to sort of navigate through the
GNOME foot menu and log out, though not completely (had to ctrl-alt-backspace
after a while). And there was a little bit of the E brushedmetal theme texture
visible on the background, so no longer just a blank white screen- though not much
better. :-)

I've attached the startup messages.

It's a little frustrating, I've had Linux on the box for over a year now, but
neither the built-in Mach64 nor the installed MacPicasso 540 has a working Xfb
yet... Then again, I haven't contributed to solving the problem, so I shouldn't
complain. :-)
