If they follow the standard procedure of posting the NMU diff to the bug,
I'm not sure why they wouldn't be helpful.  Surely any conceivable VCS is
capable of importing that patch?

They're not helpful if the maintainer already has another fix ready to go,
but they're still helpful if there's a different fix coming later (under
most circumstances), since one can just back out the NMU and put in the
new fix when it's ready.  And in the meantime the package is in better
shape while waiting for the real fix.  If the maintainer has another fix
ready to go, presumably they would say so within seven days.
