Re: Debian Menu policy leads to confusion

Please see Debian policy 9.6. Menus:

Oh, thanks. I do miss obvious things from time to time.

I would personnaly keep openoffice.org-cacl and openoffice.org-math from
Math and only keep softwares that are used for mathematics rather than
accounting, etc. but I am biaised fue to my work.

I included these because they currently are in Math. Perhaps a new section called Office is needed? All components of office suite (OpenOffice.org, GNOME Office, Koffice) could go there. It is already done this way in GNOME and this is what most people expect.

	[+]
	Section:	Modeling
Description:	3D and 2D modeling software
Example apps:	blender, k3d, [FILL ME]

Any reason to separate that from Graphism?

The description of Graphics in policy currently is "image manipulation". 3D modeling is clearly not image manipulation. The resulting product is also not always an image. Changing description of Graphics to something like "2D and 3D graphics manipulation software" might be enough though.

	Section:	Video
Description:	Video players, editors and rippers
	Example apps:	xine, totem, kino

Any reason to separate them from Viewers ?

A player and a viewer do have a different meaning (smaller or grater difference depending on a native language of a user, but still). Besides, xine can be in Viewers, but kino definitely cannot. If this is to be a part of Viewers, players, rippers and editors would end up in different sections, and having them in one place is more convenient, in my opinion. Also we have Sound section composed this way (players, editors and rippers in one section).

Well I have a plan to allow 3rd level section, somethings like
Apps/Net/Web while allowing menu to chop the Web part is there is
only one or two web browsers entries.

If a section contains 3rd level menu, all entries in it also should be 3rd level. Read below why.

So we could have e.g.

Apps/Net/Web browsers
Apps/Net/Web authoring
Apps/Net/Mail

Then better add Apps/Net/Other and put everything else there, so as not to have more frequently used software like firefox deeper in menu structure than something most users will never install, like ettercap.

But splitting Apps/Net is an option since there are 295 entries there.

I did not investigate what Net consists of in detail, but now that I have proper data, I will.
