Bug#270020: debian-policy: virtual package request: mpd-client

Package: debian-policy
Version: 3.6.1.1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I'd like to get `mpd-client' added to the virtual package list at:

http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/virtual-package-names-list.txt

Currently, mpc is the only[1] package in Debian that provides mpd-client,
but I maintain several other mpd-client packages[2]. mpd is the package
that programs providing mpd-client like mpc interact with.

The mpd protocol is well-documented, stable[3], and supported by
many client applications. Upstream has plans to file an RFC it in the
future, most likely after mpd 1.0 has standardized.

A description of the protocol is available here:
https://theory5.chem.pitt.edu/svn/mpd/mpd/trunk/doc/COMMANDS

A high-level overview of what mpd does and how clients work is available
at both the upstream homepage at http://www.MusicPD.org and
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/sound/mpd

Footnotes:

1 - mpdcon.app should provide mpd-client, too. I'll be filing a wishlist
bug against that right away.

2 - still seeking sponsors willing to understand CDBS. I may eventually
repackage some of them using my own build system (or any build system of
a potential sponsor's choice, I understand them all :) after I get mpd
fully working on my ipod (running ucLinux).

3 - old, unmaintained clients like gtk2mp continue to work after being
abandoned (no, I didn't make the deb package for that and I'm not asking
for it to be sponsored into Debian).
