Oh, I see what you're getting at. I thought you were making a general
argument for a more Cathedral-like approach to defining virtual
packages. And just incidentally picking on the cron-daemon virtual
package because it's new and not widely used yet.
Your original post had so much detail that I couldn't see the forest
for the trees.
Basically, what it comes down to is that our current cron package
provides two things: a cron daemon, and debian-specific
infrastructure. And so your question really becomes, should packages
which provide cron-daemon provide only the former, or both?
I agree, until this question is answered, the virtual package name is
useless. So we should either decide right now what it means, or
remove the name. I think we should defer the decision until after we
release (mainly because I think we should split the infrastructure
into a separate package, which is a fairly major change). So
therefore we should remove the name, for now. I have no further
reservations, I strongly support your proposal.
