Well, there are very good reasons to have mail in your homedir, but
there are also very good reasons _not_ to store mail in your homedir.

On our system we've moved to Maildir format, but the spool still lives in
/var/spool/mail.

Btw, you'll have to rewrite a lot of programs to support maildir.
I ended up writing a mail delivery program and a POP server myself
to support this ... fortunately mutt and pine (debian version) support
maildir format spools just fine, even in /var/spool/mail.
