The libc5 -> libc6 transition was far more difficult than this one. People
had to cope with code incompatibilities, different library dependencies,
etc., etc. In this case, the transition is (or should be) very simple for 
almost all packages.

The number of developers is growing at about the same rate as the number
of packages, so I don't think the amount of effort needed per developer is
higher than in previous transitions.

If the transition scheme is agreed upon before potato is released,
developers will have a lot of time to do the transition. I think it is
rediculous that you can't even ask for each package to be uploaded at
least once between two consecutive releases.

For all these reasons, I don't think my optimism is as unjustifiable as
you think it is.
