But zip is non-free -- you're opening a major can of worms here!

Or consider the case of a signed "arj" archive, where the only tool we
have available is a decompressor, which is non-free, *and* the
compression technique it uses is patented!

I think we have to make "pristine sources" a secondary or even
tertiary goal.  :-)
