Yes, and I think that the suggestion of compressing only "known file 
types" is worse, so I'm asking here just whether compressing *.db files
is ok or not.

Please, bear in mind that since debstd is in maintenance-mode-only, I'm
not going to change it in a very incompatible way from night to day.

That's exactly the reason why *.jpg files are not compressed, for example.
What I want is to be sure that not compressing *.db files is the right
thing to do, and whether or not debhelper should do the same.

Well, remember that since debstd generates the md5sums, it has to be the
last command that does "something" in the debian/tmp tree (save
chmod or chown, of course).

debstd has the option -c, which leaves compression to be done by the user
before the debstd call. Is this enough?
