Please remember that all mandantory compression results from the file
system interface not being able to represent compressed directories.

In principle, there's no reason we can't have the space/time tradeoff
afforded by compression without requiring files names to change, and
without requiring any changes to the programs which use those files.
However, no one has implemented that yet.

That said, I think the appropriate thing for debstd to do is allow a way
to uncompress files (or whatever else) after they've been compressed.
I've not checked to verify that it already does this, but I think I
remembere it having that capability.
