FHS is compliant with this respect in that
the Single UNIX Specification being a source spec does not define the
file tree layout for other than a few key files and directories.
It mainly concentrates on programming APIs - with UNIX 98 adding
internet protocols & services and Java.
The defined Directory Structure and Devices are described online at:
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/7908799/xbd/files.html
Personally, I think a symlink would accomplish the job and keep all
parties happy. Many of the commercial UNIX vendors now follow the SVR4
layout - some of them using symlinks.
