So what's the problem with something like
case `id -u` in
0) # whatever we want for root
;;
*) # whatever we want for everybody else
;;
esac
?
As there are often reasons to change stuff for both root and normal users
(as well as to only change things for one or the other), keeping it all
together means that it's harder to get out of sync.
(id -u is in Unix98.)
