As this might confuse some people know (I think), let me comment on this:
We've agreed (at least for my part :-) that the best solution in the long
run is to implement something like the "Origin" control field. Such a
field would allow the user to identifiy which party produced a package.
Furthermore, dpkg could be extended to warn the user if he/she tries to
mix packages from different origins.
(Note, that this is just a "draft" idea. It definitely needs more
discussion.)
For the short-time solution, we have agreed that it does not help to use
virtual packages. Virtual packages only make sense if they are supported
by the packages forever. (Just consider a user installing the KDE packages
today and upgrading the system to Debian 5.0 in three years.)
In summary: For now, the Debian KDE packages will not be changed. However,
the unofficial Debian packages that will eventually be distributed on
CD-ROM in Germany might get different dependencies to fit with the KDE's
packages on the same CD-ROM. Note, that these changed packages will not be
labeled as official Debian packages.)
I think (at least I hope) that everyone can live with this solution.
Thanks,
Chris
