That I find to be something I really don't want on mailinglists - leading
questions. Of course people don't want disrespectful language and obscenity
on mailing lists - unless of course that is the topic of such a mailinglist.
The real question is: do we want rules or do we trust that everyone will
behave as mature individuals. I'd like to opt for the latter, although I
know that the occasional tiff (or is that with one 'f') will occur anyway,
people being what they are. People feel strongly about a project like
Debian and in my opinion, that is good for the project because it lessens
the chance of inertia.
Mutual respect should be earned and not enforced by rules.
(O, btw, without meaning to be disrespectful to you, but how would you have
liked it if I had started this with: "Do we really want a project leader
who asks leading questions ?". Add more rhetoric like "and wants us to
adopt his rules". Or even more rhetoric "adopt his fascist egocentric
rules". It's not obscene. Disrespectful is also questionable - it would be
'allowed'. Yet it would radiate an atmosphere of hostility. Not a good
thing. One of the reasons I do not like the "Do people really want..." kind
of questions. I always counter with "how do you know people wouldn't
want...".)
