I was trying exactly what you suggest - get the older location in a separate git repository (planning for later to replay the newer location's commits on top). The problem I saw is more on the CVS side of things: ... revision 1.2 of file debian/control is tagged but not present ... Still, having others coming with the same idea as I is reassuring I am not completely off track.
