thank you very much for the suggestion. I now use it for the bioperl package (maintained by the Debian Med packaging team), and just asked on -devel if there were many other users and if it should be documented somwhere.
Glad that you found the approach useful.And great that you posted to d-devel about it. I know that I should have done that a long time ago myself - it is embarrasing, but I feel exhhausted just thinking about starting an argument at d-devel :-/
