Re: GSoC, Outreachy and other time commitments (other jobs, etc)

Hey, I would suggest to follow a milestone based week (just like the one gsoc has). The milestones for each week can be decided by the mentors after discussing with students. It doesnt matter whether a persons works 40hrs/week but whether he finished his milestone for the week. Rather than time based evaluation a work based one will be better for more productivity.

What I want to know is 40 hours per week of work does not mean 40 hours of coding right ?
Can it be documenting / designing architecture or debugging as well ?

And what would happen if the student who worked 40hrs/week but still could not complete the project ?

Also I and my mentors live in different time zone (India and Europe) so it might not be possible for me any my mentor to be online and work at same time so in such cases what steps are taken ?

Thanks.

What Google's FAQ says *this year* is clear:

| How much time does GSoC participation take?
|
| You are expected to spend about 40 hours a week working on your project
| during the 3 month coding period. If you already have an internship,
| another summer job, or plan to be gone on vacation for more than a week
| during that time, GSoC is not the right program for you this year.

This is certainly more explicit than the equivalent FAQ entry has been
in previous years, but what the FAQ for 2016 says is what matters for
2016.

I understand you don't like this expectation, but trying to subvert it
within Debian is not productive - getting Debian banned from GSoC isn't
good for anybody.  If you want to change the basis on which students are
expected to work, you really need to take it up with the OSPO team.

Cheers,
