I disagree. It's probably usedul for essential stuff but not for GUI
stuff. (and graphite is about fonts, so GUI).


There actually is effort in Debian to get rid of .as and MANY packages
don't ship .as anymore. I am not convinced adding a new .a now is a way
forward.
