_Debian package version_ - not some (internal!) upstream version...

So -gtk2. -gtk is a dummy.

No, because at the package install you don't know the desktop or whatever
one might want to run it in.

Eeven if you install it from xfce, who says you might not want to use it
in GNOME? Or KDE? Or no DE at all? Or if you install it from the console
or no DE?

The tasks already install the "correct" additional packages where applicable.

And you don't want to force -gtk(2) on people who want -gtk3 or even -kde.
